Cohorts and Businesses – The Community Connection

by Emma Brewster, ’18

I stumbled across the Collaborative MBA three years ago when searching for a flexible program that I could complete while working, and one that would support the development of my business. I own a coffee shop in a tourist town which meant weekend programs were not possible. When I found the Collaborative MBA, I felt like the program had the right mix of practical skills, an educational philosophy I could get behind, and, most importantly, regarded businesses as community members – not just money-making machines.

I was a little hesitant to enroll in a Mennonite institution, having no connection to the Mennonite community, nor any faith practice of my own. I ultimately decided I would not be able to find another program so centered on community in its consideration of business. I had confidence I could focus on building a sustainable business and community in any program I entered, but I was thrilled to join a program where everyone would be thinking about those ideals.

Yet, I was fairly skeptical of online education. The cohort model and synchronous classes offered by the Collaborative MBA suggested I would have the discussion-driven, connection-based classroom experience I valued. My cohort made lasting relationships during the initial residency that were deepened each week during class. The cohort model provides built-in cheerleaders and troubleshooters for managing life and school. My peers were great motivators, study buddies, and friends. As we approached graduation last spring, I was thrilled to be done with classes, but a little sad to lose my tight knit group.

Today I can see the experiences of my classes affecting decisions I make in my business, as well as impacting how I serve on boards and my big picture views of what is happening in my community. I know I will continue to draw on parts of each class for skills and direction as we launch a new part of our business.
